The S1500 is designed to be easy to use. Once the software is installed, you can start a scan by just inserting the documents and pressing the scan button. The scanner automatically recognized whether the document is a photo or text and knows whether it should scan in color or black and white. How much desk space does the scanner take up and how difficult is it to move?
The scanner is actually smaller and more compact than you might expect considering all it’s features. With the top folded down, it is a bit smaller than 12″ wide by 6″ high and 6″ long. So, it doesn’t take up much desktop real estate, although it does require more space in operation for the paper exit.

I have now purchased two ScanSnap S1500 machines and they are amazing. Setup was simple and straightforward and the scanner performs flawlessly. The footprint is very compact but opens easily to enable use. Quality of scanned documents is very good and you can scan multiple documents of varying dimensions at the same time. It will scan for duplex copies and remove blank pages automatically. If you want a machine that does one thing (scanning) exceptionally well, ScanSnap 1500 is the choice.

ScanSnap S1500M gobbles up piles of paper at an amazing rate. One-side or two-side scanning takes the same time. I have put just about every type of paper through it, often of mixed sizes and types (e.g., legal and letter size, 3×5 cards, newspaper and magazine clippings, unfolded brochures). A carrier sheet is available for crumpled, folded, or extremely thin paper. I’ve only had one paper jam (an odd-shaped, somewhat crumpled page that I ran without using the carrier sheet). Clearing jams is trivially easy because of the almost straight-through paper path. I am amazed by the quality of the scans. Photos sometimes look better than the originals. Web-based electronic document management is one of the most useful resources companies have available to keep their managers, staff, and customers informed. Managing files effectively is an ongoing challenge, but a well-planned document management implementation makes it significantly easier. Scanning, which ideally is the entry point of data into the active life of a document in the document lifecycle, can be ineffective if careful thought is not given to the imaging and indexing process. When it is done properly, however, scanning ensures that the data stored in the document management system is valid, readable, secure, accessible, and useful throughout the enterprise.

Scanning in general, and desktop scanning in particular, facilitates the collection and management of information for managers, staff, and even customers. Convenience and ease of use in a desktop scanning solution make it tempting to scan everything for easy access. In reality, however, desktop scanning only promotes efficiency if it is understood, used wisely (for the capture of useful data), and implemented correctly.

To maximize the productivity that any imaging solution provides, you must understand your goals, the document types that support your processes, the usefulness of the data contained within those documents, and more. This article is intended to help readers evaluate when desktop scanning of documents and images is not a cost-effective and appropriate solution. What information is typically used to associate documents with each other in the physical storage process? What other departments rely on information contained in each of the forms? 1. Establish simple business rules that make sense to the end user

In some cases, desktop scanning equipment is operated exclusively by staff, and in other cases, it may be desirable to put the power of scanning into the hands of the customer. For example, a collegiate setting often affords students the opportunity to scan their own forms. One of the benefits of a desktop scanning solution is the ability to make it accessible for people who have limited technological savvy. Without a good indexing plan that lets you retrieve your images and data when they are needed, the best quality images of your documents are rendered useless.

4. Verify the quality of the scans

High-quality desktop scanning solutions do an excellent job of automatically verifying the completion and integrity of scans. They typically report the certainty of a scanned image quality as they create the electronic image, just as a printer informs the user of the degree to which a requested printing process is complete. Since a large volume of information collected by most companies still originates on paper, desktop scanning is a critical element in the process. However, it is not the only element. As you create a repository of useful data via your desktop scanning solution, evaluate other ways you could maximize the use of your document management system. If your information continues to be stored in hybrid technologies and isolated silos, the data you capture through desktop scanning will still be valuable, but that value will not yet be maximized. Bar code reading software, electronic forms, and other technologies can help you get all of your information into one location.

6. Send business-critical information on its way

Since desktop scanning brings the greatest value to a business during the active stage of the document lifecycle rather than at the end, a company or organization gains the greatest value from the data by using it to activate routine processes. Businesses that automate their processes with digital workflow can build on the accurate information obtained through digital capture. The data collected can be used to expedite processing in accordance with the company’s predefined business rules, resulting in faster and better service.

For example, an insurance application that is captured with a desktop scanner could automatically trigger a request for specific additional information. Or, it could push a copy of the application forward to the agent for evaluation and approval or signature, and then to the head office team for their simultaneous or sequential review. Similarly, the capture of a grievance form from an employee could trigger a procedure to send that grievance forward to the human resources department and to the appropriate members of the management team. The simple capture of data, viewed perhaps by some as an accessory to the document management process, becomes one of the most vital parts, telling the storage system what information is important, and dictating how the system will respond.

Compared to almost all other scanners, the ScanSnap S1500 makes the usual scanner tasks easier and much faster. Even if you are not particularly “tech savvy”, you can quickly learn to use this scanner to make paper copies, send documents as email attachments and scan and organize piles of papers.

Faster is so much better
One of the problems of many scanners is that they just take too long. Slow scanners are OK if you only have to scan one form to email to someone, or if you just want to keep a record of one receipt. But, what if you have a stack of receipts? Or, what if you need to scan your tax return or a business presentation?

That is what makes the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 head and shoulders above most other scanners. It is blazingly fast. It scans pages at 20 pages per minute- that is one page every 3 seconds! Not only that, but it scans both sides of each of those pages. With speed like that, you can really use this scanner to turn those paper files into digital ones.

No need to hand feed it one page at a time.
The S1500 also features advanced document handling which means that you can insert a stack of papers at once and they don’t have to even be the same size! Simply align the bottom edge of the pages (a sharp tap on the desktop will do it) and slip them in the scanner. Each page will be drawn into the scanner and scanned, while you do something else. You can set the scanner to name each page as a separate PDF file, or all together as one file in the case of a mulipage document. You can even set teh scanner to create a new PDF file after a certain number of pages, so that if you have a number of two page documents for example, each one will be created as one file. And you can set it in duplex mode so that it will be scanning the backs of those sheets as well.

Easy to setup and use
One of the reasons that many scanners are difficult to use is that you are required to make a lot of complicated decisions each time you want to scan something. You have to decide on technical things like input dpi, output dpi, page size, color or b&W, image quality and more. For most of us, this ends in a lot of trial and error before we get even one scan that is worth keeping.

But the ScanSnap is way different. Fujitsu has created a technology that they call Automatic Resolution and Intelligent Auto Color Detection. What this means is that the scanner automatically detects the type of document you are scanning and whether it is color or black and white. In most cases, you don’t have to change any settings. You just load in the pages and press the Scan button. And in no time flat, the scanner goes to work, scanning all your documents perfectly.

Instant Copies
One of the more common uses of a scanner is in making paper copies of a document. Some scanners make you go through several steps to accomplish this, but not the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500. It is designed to make this process quick and easy. Once you have the scanner plugged into the USB port on your computer and the software installed, you simply load the original and select the “scan to print” menu item. The scanner scans the image and a special print dialog box appears. You can select how many copies you want and make other choices before printing. If you have a color printer, you can even print color copies!

A Must Have
This is un upgrade from my ScanSnap 300 (mobile) – and it is FAST! Scanning both sides at once is really great and the software included is very comprehensive. It even comes with a copy of Acrobat Standard 9.0. The quality of the scans is better than that of the 300 and again, it is so much faster! I now have scanned all the bills and other statements I had been saving for reference and am using Mozy for backup. I can now retrieve them in a matter of seconds (ScanSnap S1500 generates searchable PDF’s running OCR). It feels good to finally find what I am looking for, including documents that were burried in the bottom of some box or drawer with the additional peace of mind of having a secure copy in a different location. One problem: It DOES have double feeds and paper jams! A little more than I expected. Expecially when scanning mail. But all in all, it is so fast, even when you feed smaller batches, it is still a very fast process. All in all: a real time and space saver.

Best $400 We’ve Ever Spent
We have a $6,000 printer/scanner. I FAR prefer this $400 Fujitsu scansnap s1500 scanner. Our expensive scanner cannot scan double and single sided pages at the same time (you could scan them all double sided, but they you end up with a ton of blank pages). Our expensive scanner cannot handle mixed sizes of paper; this one can.
I have scanned checks, business cards, brochures, note pad sized paper–all with no problem.
The business card scanning feature is so cool! Once I figured out how to add fields to the default setup, I just toss the cards in, it scans and recognizes the fields, then I can export them to Outlook!
It’s tiny–it sits on my desk, so now intead of walking down the hallway, switching our big machines from copy to scan, sitting down at the workstation, firing up the scanning software, scanning, changing the machine back to copy, and returning to my desk, I pop what I want to scan on the ScanSnap, hit the button, and WHAM! Pages go flying through and I’m done.
The reviewer who complained you cannot append exisiting files was mistaken. If you scan your new pages, then open the original document, you can easily insert the new pages in “edit” mode of the ScanSnap software.

Really Great Scanner Package
I purchased the s1500 to file personal documents that have been taking up an increasing amount of space. It suits this purpose extremely well.
- It will indeed scan 50 pages either double sided or single.
- It does a good job of auto-detecting blank sheets and eliminating them.
- Will auto-detect and correct upside down pages.
- Color accuracy is good.
- It is relatively fast.
- It is compact occupying little desk space when not in use and not much more when in use.
- It will scan receipts and business cards. It will scan various size documents in a batch if you are carefull. Although, the most relaible results come from scanning documents of the same width in the same batch. It will readily tolerate mixed document lengths.
- It was bundled with Adobe Acorbat 9 which is wonderful in its own right. It allows merging of .pdfs and deleting pages and much more.
- I am using it with Windows 7 Home Premium with no problems.

Awesome scanner — trust me!
Before the purchase of the scansnap s1500, I had 3 scanners including one flatbed. It was difficult pouring more money into the promise of a digital life. But I went ahead and dove in paying yet another steep price. I will tell you that this is the best decision I have made as far as scanners are concerned. Forget wasting money (and I do say waste because you end up never using them) on other scanners or multi-function machines. Just drop the money and get this unit. You won’t regret it.

Simple and easy to use
I bought this for my spouse’s CPA business, but I noticed it also worked with Evernote.
I installed it to my laptop and set it up to upload directly to Evernote. 250 business cards were scanned in no time flat — all instantly searchable through Evernote. I spent another thirty minutes scanning a large stack of recipe clips, invoices, and receipts I had piled on my desk. All went seamlessly to Evernote, searchable by the content. No problem with different sizes and two sided documents. All but one were handled perfectly. Only glitch was a clip torn from the New York Times magazine. The uneven edge of the very thin paper — slightly too wide for the feeder — caught the edge of the scanner and jammed. I trimmed the rough edge with a pair of scissors and it then scanned fine.

What a Scanner
This scanner is fast, efficient, and get’s the job done in no time. We were using a Xerox WorkCentre and this scanner just puts it to shame. Also, it scans duplex with a single pass and can scan all different sizes at the same time. Post processing is easy as well, adding more documents to a single file or adding more dual sided documents.
It’s easy to setup and the software that comes with it is all you need to scan to PDF searchable and the search works.
The best part of all is it scans in color or black and white and the images are 600X600dpi making it a nice image to look at.

It’s just stunningly easy to use: all you have to do is just load the document and press the scan button – nothing more – and you get a PDF file.
I thought I would have to mess with settings to get this thing to work the way I wanted for the task at hand… and was pleasantly surprised that it did everything perfect with default settings. Excellent software!
It’s also a beautiful piece of hardware – very stylish. The paper trays fold nicely out of the way when the scanner is not in use, takes very little desk space.
I’ve never been more impressed with a computer peripheral.

Worth every penny and more
If you are getting into keeping all your records on a server this is great. Any hard copies you have are quickly made into pdfs. You can easily name the file and direct to the correct folder. The thing is fast and does both sides at once. The scansnap s1500 really is better than advertised. No I don’t work for the company I work C&S Companies. I purchased it for testing in a Construction Field Office. Lengthy submittals, certs, delivery tickets and all kinds of Docs are quickly turned into pdfs and filed away. Rather than FAX a document you can scan it and send crystal clear copies. You have to use to see how useful it is. It’s not like the scanning I’ve been used to.

It’s a good scanner
This is an awesome scanner. I left a post-it note on a photo I scanned. The scanner told me it had detected a duplicate feed – and I thought, I’ll pay that! And the thing was, I did not want the post-it note to be scanned. So I took it off and re-scanned the photo. The rest of the photos in the batch went through fine. The scanner uses some very impressive technology like that.
It scans both sides of the page. That is seriously a feature you must have. Trying to scan a 2-sided document without this is a fiddle and waste of time and invariably ends up in tears, frustration and anger.
Physical design is good. It folds out and folds out, it is Japanese origami.
Speed is fast. But if you really want to do a full colour very fine resolution scan it will slow down a bit and give beautiful results.
I recommend this scanner if you want to clear your papers and free up your deskspace and throw out your paper files. It will get you there.

Incredible Machine and Great Deal
I purchased this to replace an HP Scanjet which was giving me all kinds of problems. This Fujitsu scansnap s1500 is a DREAM COME TRUE. The setup was effortless, and the scans are incredible quality. It is very fast and extremely easy to use. I’m not a techie by any means, but this machine is so easy to use, I don’t need to be. It saves me a lot of time, during a time of year that I need every second I can get. I will definately buy another one of these machines if I find a second scanner for the office or form my home. There are absolutely no negatives to this machine.

Best Scanner Ever
I have now purchased two ScanSnap S1500 machines and they are amazing. Setup was simple and straightforward and the scanner performs flawlessly. The footprint is very compact but opens easily to enable use. Quality of scanned documents is very good and you can scan multiple documents of varying dimensions at the same time. It will scan for duplex copies and remove blank pages automatically. If you want a machine that does one thing (scanning) exceptionally well, ScanSnap 1500 is the choice.

Oh man I love this thing
What a great scanner. Instantaneous duplex is great. This thing tears through stacks of paper and almost never misfeeds, unless you are giving it stuff like wrinkled tissue paper. If you are looking to convert a lot of paper documents into PDFs or similar, this is the scanner for you. The scanner is also quite compact and looks great on a desk. Its footprint, when folded, is about half the size of a piece of paper.The higher price is worth it – I have used many sheet-fed scanners, and this is by far the best. The excellent paper feeding is really where this unit shines.
